Progressive Part 2 Movements Review

Directions: Under each complete the phrase, answer the question, fill in the blank, or define the definition.

Describe what a settlement house is: were community centers that provided social services
urban poor families, it provided childcare classes, Enlisgh classes, education opportunites and art classes for adults.

where people are Who was the leading figure of the settlement house movement? Why? Jane Adams, She opened the Hull House in Chicago and was a prominent figure at the time.

Describe Progressive Children’s reforms: Congress in 1938 ended the Progressive children's reforms because they wanted to improve the children's education.

Describe Progressive Industrial Workers Reform: What was the leading cause of it? In the Triangle shirt factory a fire broke out and killed 146 workers mostly because of the fire precautions.

Describe gov reforms during progressive era: The result of poor planning, a hurricane passed in Galveston, TX and the city replaced the mayor and alderman with 5 person commission.

Direct primary- Took choice out of party leaders and they handed it to the people.

Recall- Allowed the citizens to remove elected officials by vote.

Referendum- Allowed people to vote or reject a law.

Initiative- People could propose new laws, but they must sign a petition.

Jim Crow Laws- Were segregated AA, and so banned them from voting.

Plessey vs. Ferguson- Said that as long as places were equal they can be separate.

Describe how the NAACP started and its mission- Because of threats of lynching AA prisoners, they started up and they aslo were for the advancement for colored people.
