Civil War Part 6

BR: What does Douglas say the Union has been fighting to this point? What does he think the Union should be fighting? How does the proclamation change the war? It's the turning point between freedom and slavery, instead the Union is fighting to keep slavery intact.

Civil War Part 6 Review

What did Union do when came across African Americans early in the war? They were either freed or they were put to work.


What is Emancipation Proclamation? In 1862, President Lincoln forms a plan to free all slaves but needed Victory in battle to guarantee the support.


Why does Lincoln issue proclamation? Lincoln issued it to end Slavery in the South.


What effect does proclamation have? The effects had mixed reactions in North, but became turning point of war making war about slavery for north and convincing the South to negotiate the end but it was not possible. It also made the African Americans want to join the army and be apart of the war.


How African Americans participated in the war: After the Union let them in the war; they were given the menial task, longest guard duty, placed in exposed positions, and took the time to get equal pay.


Describe Life in North during War: The life in North was rough, the loss of cotton hurt northern textile industry, other industries began making war supplies, and Government introduced income tax to pay for supplies that increased as war goes.


Describe Life in South during War: The economic demands tough on South because they lacked resources to meet demands. The union also blockade forced South to rely on own farms and factories which had trouble supplying the military and the population.


Describe Life of Soldiers during the War: The soldiers had first taste of traveling and when they were not fighting they had time to write cards and pray.

Describe Life of Women during the War: The war opened so many opportunities for the women, they helped with men at war as the took care of family business, farms, and plantations. Some women mask themselves as men to fight in the war alongside men.

Civil War Part 5




Bell Ringer: Why did the future seem so bleak to confederate soldiers returning home after the war? The future seemed so bleak because of the aftermat the war had left upon the South, so many houses had been burned down and people died during this war. It was sad to them because it would take them the longest time to recover over this devastation.




Civil War Part 5 Review

What two strategies does Grant use to win the war? To defeat Lee wherever he may be and Commit to a strategy of total war, which meant he was also going to strike civilian population.

Describe how Grant takes it to Lee: He took control of Western Army himself and fought brutal battles with Lee including the Wilderness.

Describe Sherman’s March to the Sea: The Confeds could not stop Sherman who looted, pillaged, and set fire to everything in his way which included the burning of Atlanta.

Describe the Battle of Petersburg: In 1864 during the summer, Grant pushed Lee to Petersburg which is about 20 miles South of Richmond. He employs siege strategy at Petersburg and after several weeks of fighting Lee.

Describe Lee’s surrender: Lee’s hope was to join his army with Confed troops that were in NC, but exhausted troops became trapped at Appomattox Court House.

Describe the death of Lincoln: It was right after the surrender at Appomattox where Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth during a play at Ford theater in DC.




Exit Ticket : I learned that Wheeler was in the Civil war but went back to the Union and then I learned that John Wilkes Booth was an actor at theater because I didn't know that. Sherman burned all of Atlanta and he was stubborn.

Civil War Part 4 Review

Describe why lee makes the move to Gettysburg: Lee felt that he had an opportunity to win international support, demoralize the Union, and perhaps to win the war. In june of 63 he marches the Confeds to Penn.

Describe Gettysburg Day 1: July 1st 1863, Lee's men ran into Fed Cavalry to Northwest of Gettysburg, Fed call for support which is now run by George Meade. On the first day, The confeds pushed Union down hill and throughtout the town, and up into a set of ridges and hills to the South of town.

Describe Gettysburg Day 2: On the 2nd of July, He orders General Longstreet to attack from South end of the battle line. Lee is met by Union troops that mistakenly left Little Round Top, the fighthing was strong but Longstreet could not break through.

Describe Gettysburg Day 3: Lee had tried once more, first by opening the morning with a major cannon attack meant to break Union troops. He orders a full frontal assault on Cemetery Ridge. Known as Pickett's Charge, Union cannon and musket mowed down Confeds.

Describe Gettysburg Address: On November 1863, Lincoln comes to Gettsyburg, Penn. and gives a short speech honoring the dead, and described the war as struggle to fulfill the Dec of Indp.

BR: Why does Farley's description tell you about what it is like to be on a Battlefield.
Because it showing us how horrorable it was to witness a battle as gruesome as he explained in the description. People getting killed, blood splatter everywhere, cannons and guns shooting. Finding way to keep your life because you are your own when you fight and he was telling us how bad it was out there.

Mexican American War Review

Why was there tension between Mexicans and the American settlers to Texas? The tension was because the settlers stayed Protestants and they still used slavery. The Mexicans were Roman Catholics and they did not like that the settlers would not convert and their use of slavery

Describe the Battle of the Alamo and why it was fought? It was the rebellion of Texas to gain their independence from Mexico and they did not want to be under the ruling of Santa Ana. But the Battle of Alamo was lost and Mexico came in to take over.

Describe Sam Houston’s defeat of Santa Ana: Sam Houston defeats Santa Ana and captures him in the Battle of Jacinto. They force him to watch Texas gain their independence and sign the treaty that gave them more land than traditional boundaries.

Describe the US’s annexation of Texas: When Sam Houston becomes president by Texas and he asked the US to give annexation to Texas. During that time Jackson was president and agrees with him but Congress did not favor it.

Describe how Polk provokes the Mexican’s into war: Polk endorse Texas claim of all territory that was surrendered by Santa Ana. He sends some troops into contested region waiting on conflict so he could declare war.
Describe the Military aspects of the Mexican American War: The US won almost every battle including the seizing of New Mexico, California, Monterrey, Mexican Port, and Veracruz.

Describe what the US gets from the Treaty ending the Mexican American War: The war gave the US the border at Rio Grande, Cali, and New Mexico. Polk thought that what they gave the US was little but had to accept because Congress would not support a long war.

Bell Ringer: What would it be like to be in the Middle of such a Battle? It would be very scary to go through that situation, not knowing what to do and being rushed to safety but others. It brings so much commotion plus destruction that people could get killed by the commotion of it all.

Age of Jackson Review

Describe Jackson’s push and winning of the presidency: Andrew Jackson was a commoner and he was like everyone else, he wasn’t rich and he got well-known by the military. He was normal and everyone was happy to have someone understand the people. Jackson defeated John Quincy Adams in the elections for president with his party.

Describe the Indian Removal Act: In 1830 Congress passed the Indian Removal Act which was to peacefully get the Indians to trade their land with the South.

Describe the Bank Crisis: Congress passed a charter for a second bank of the US in 1816 but Jackson and his supporters did not like it because they saw it as a corruption. They thought it was an interest for the rich and Congress tired to vote for a renew charter but Jackson vetoed it.

Describe the reaction to Jackson’s policies: Jackson created a political party called Whigs which challenged the Democratic side. Andrew Jackson was reelected during a landslide and it caused the federal bank to weaken then it made the economy weak.


Bell Ringer: What was unusual about Andrew Jackson Inauguration? Why mite Jackson have been called the peoples president? Jackson was a commoner and he was normal like everyone else. He truly understood the people which was helpful to the people and they were happy to have a president who could understand their own needs.

Reform Review :)

Bell Ringer: What is Gromke's main argument in support of Women's rights?
That men and women are ceated equal and that women should get the same rights as men instead of the slaves. To be treated fair and not taken for granted and for everyone to take them seriously.

Reform Movement Review

Describe the expansionist movement: The expansionist began to use the term Manifest Destiny which they believed that God wanted the US to own all of North America.

Describe Manifest Destiny and what people used it to justify: Manifest Destiny was to own all of North America and then expand the people along the Rookies, Oregon, and other places in the west.

Describe the Temperance Movement: While the US expanded so did the crimes, sickness, poverty, and neglected families. Then many people became addict to alcohol which caused the prohibition.

Describe the Abolition Movement: Since the growth of Cotton cause to increase the rate of slavery. Then by the 1800’s many people began to oppose against slavery and fight for the slaves.

Describe the Education Reform Movement: There weren’t public schools in colonial times because most people could not afford it and reformers wanted to start public school system from tax money. The main person who started it was Horace Mann and he created a state board in Mass.
Describe the Reform Movement for Women’s rights including the Seneca Falls Conference: In the 1800’s women influence their husbands and make differences. Women began to work cause of the North industrializing and gave them new opportunities. And the in 1848 Elizabeth Cady Stanton and other organized first women’s right convention called Seneca Falls and the would fight for women’s rights.

Describe advances in road construction: To change the methods of manufacturing and transportation they made the effort to improve roads in some states and starting off with the turnpikes which were tolled

Describe advances in water transportation: Steam boats were made to transport on water to make things go faster and powering them by paddles with steam

Why is the Eerie Canal important? The Eerie canal connected the Hudson River with Lake Eerie to pass goods through NYC which made it industrial.

Describe advances in railroads: It began in the US in 1820, the railroads cost less to build than ships and it moved way faster than the ships plus it could carry more weight.

Describe advances in industry including Samuel Slater: He built the first water powered textile mill from memory.

Describe the inventions of Sam Morse and Eli Whitney: Eli Whitney invented the Cotton Gin which would make it easier to pick out the seeds of cotton instead of doing it by hand. Then Sam Morse created the electric telegraph allowing others to communicate over distance.

Why did the Cotton Gin expand slavery? It expanded it because the slaves still need to pick the cotton for the machine.

Bell Ringer: How long does the young women work in the Lowell Mill each day? What effect do you think work would have on a young person each day?
The women worked from 7 to 7:30 each day at the Mill. For some it would have been fun because the women are actually give and task but it would tire them very much. Doing hard labor is very tough and then doing the same thing everyday could bore someone to death.

Exit Ticket: In today’s lesson I learned that during the Revolution, roads were improved to transport goods. Then, they started building steam boats for goods to be transported faster. After that steam boats and the roads improved, they began to build railroads for trains, which seem to be a little more faster and they could carry more weight.

Bell Ringer: Why do you think that the British targeted Washington D.C?
Cause it was where the Central Goverment was settled and they knew it would devastate them to see it all get burned down.

War of 1812 Review

Directions: Under each complete the phrase, answer the question, fill in the blank, or define the definition.

How does the US become involved in the war between GB and the French? The US became involved by shipping goods to France and GB after finding them in the West Indies.

Impressments- Is when the British captured the US sailors to make them become part of their Navy

What initial action does Jefferson take in war between GB and France to protect the US? Jefferson took the decision to cut off trade with the British and convinced the Congress to start an embargo. But it did not work for the British found others to trade within Louisiana and it made the American merchants bankrupt.

Describe the Congressional Action that pushes the US to war: The Congress passed bills in 1809 that said the US would still continue to trade with GB and France but if both countries found out of the US neutrality then they would continue trade.

What does Madison ask Congress to do? Madison asked Congress to declare war on GB and Congress favored the command.

Describe the initial actions of the US in the War of 1812: Jefferson, who had become Madison’s advisor, encouraged for US to invade Canada which they did several times in 1812 and 1813.

Describe US action along fronts other than the Canadian: The US also captured some of the British ships and defeated Indians by the support of the British. Andrew Jackson also led a group to help the US defeat the Indians.

What happens in the War when GB’s war with Napoleon ends? A thousand more British troops were free to fight in America and the British set troops in Maine, NY, Maryland, and New Orleans.

Describe the end of the war including the writing of the star spangled banner: America won against the British forces everywhere but no it in Maine. The British also burned down the White House and the Capitol to get back at them for arsons in Canada. But still they were defeated and Frances Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner in Baltimore.


What battle makes Jackson a hero? The Battle of New Orleans in 1815 which was won by Jackson made him the Big shot in America.

Our society is filled with music that is unbelievably good and have good beats. Songs that always make us happy or music that reaches our hearts. Its music that we can compare too and helps get through the day. Well on Saturday January 31st, those songs recieved recognition for the lyrics that expressed so much emotion on The Grammy's. All artist got to perform or show off their songs to the world for exchange of an award. There were many artist who went home with awards for like best song, best album, best pop song, best dance song, and etc. Lady Gaga which was one of the artist who is loved by society was nominated 8 times and another artist who is glamored by socitet was Beyonce, she was nominated 9 times. But it was not good enough for them for Taylor Swift a country singer to take the prize and show it off to the world, She won the award of Best Album which beat Lady Gaga and Beyonce.

Territorial Expansion Review

Describe the Northwest Ordinance: Provides gov for Western territories based on Jefferson ideals. Territory would have a governor, secretary, and three Judges.

Describe Jefferson’s plan to expand the US: Jefferson wanted to get more land by expanding the Pacific and but the colonist and Indians were already settled there.

Describe the Louisiana Purchase: Napoleon agrees to sell the territories in 1803 giving away the Louisiana Purchase including New Orleans.

Describe the Lewis and Clark Expedition: In 1804 Thomas Jefferson sends Lewis and Clark on expedition to explore the territory and on their way the came across an Indian woman by the name of Sacagawea, who helped them.

Describe the Monroe Doctrine: In 1823 foreign policy doctrine said that Europe should not become involved with any Latin affairs and it wasn’t important enough to be passed.
